6 Ways to Energize Your Home Office When Business Feels Slow

When your business isn’t performing as well as you’d like, and you work from home, it’s easy to fall into stress, self-doubt, or scrambling for strategy. But before you overhaul your entire business plan or launch something new, try this: refresh your home office.

Your physical environment deeply impacts your energy, focus, and productivity. And when the energy in your workspace is stagnant, your business often follows suit. Fortunately, a few intentional tweaks to your office space can reinvigorate not only your energy, but your results.

Here are six simple, powerful actions to energize your home office and help get your business flowing again.

1.  Clean Your Desk

Let’s start with the obvious but often avoided: clear the clutter. Clutter blocks energy and blocks the opportunities and resources you desire from coming to you. So if your desk is a dumping ground for old mail, empty coffee cups, paperwork that belongs elsewhere, or yesterday’s lunch, it’s time for a reset.

Remove anything that doesn’t belong. File what needs to be filed, toss what needs to go, and relocate what has a better home elsewhere.

Now let’s look at what’s left, especially décor and trinkets. One by one, hold each item and ask yourself: Does this need to live on my desk right now? Even if it’s cute or meaningful, it might be better placed on a shelf nearby, windowsill, or different room altogether. Your desk is for your work and should support clarity, productivity, and inspiration.

Don’t forget the drawers! Toss or relocate old supplies, outdated documents, and anything that no longer feels relevant.  Aim for open space in each drawer as your drawers should have room to receive.

Finally, physically clean your desk with intention. Wipe the surfaces, dust the corners, and refresh the space. A clean slate sets the stage for new ideas and fresh momentum.

2.  Rearrange for Power and Flow

If your desk is shoved in a corner, has your back to the door, or faces a wall of shelves, it might be time to reposition.

In Feng Shui, the Command Position is the most empowered place to sit in a room. You should be able to see the door while seated at your desk, but not be directly in line with it. This allows you to feel safe, aware, and supported while avoiding the overwhelming rush of energy that comes from facing the door head-on.

If possible, position your desk so there’s a solid wall behind you rather than a window. Energetically, this provides support and grounding. Likewise, avoid having shelves or sharp-edged furniture aimed at your front, back, side, or head. They create what’s called “poison arrow” energy that can lead to distraction, pressure, or even burnout.

Once your desk is in a better position, rearrange the rest of your furniture to support flow. Think ease of movement, visual balance, and harmony.

3.  Diffuse Essential Oils While You Work

Essential oils can instantly shift the energy of a space and your mood. The have their own energetic frequency and emotional benefit, so use what you need based on how you want to feel while you work.

Citrus oils (like lemon, orange, grapefruit, lime, tangerine, bergamot) bring upliftment and positivity, perfect for when you’re dragging yourself to your desk.

Woodsy oils (like vetiver, frankincense, cedarwood, sandalwood) offer grounding and creativity, ideal for focus and inspiration.

Minty oils (like peppermint or spearmint) increase alertness and help you feel refreshed.

You can also blend your own combinations to support your desired work vibe, whether that’s calm and creative, energized and productive, or all of the above.

4.  Clean Your Office Entrance

Your office door, whether or not clients ever see it, holds symbolic and energetic importance. It’s the gateway to your business, so treat it with care.

Clean both sides of the door and the surrounding floor area. If your door squeaks, sticks, or needs repair, fix it as soon as possible. Every time you pass through that door, it should feel like an invitation to expansion, not resistance.

5.  Let In Fresh Air

Open a window during the day to allow fresh air and new energy to circulate. This simple act can create a subtle but noticeable lift in the space. It encourages energetic movement and symbolizes release of stagnation.

Let the breeze in, even for just a few minutes. It brings clarity, clears out the old, and makes space for the new.

6.  Ring a Bell

Ringing a bell in your office helps break up stagnant or stuck energy. Sound vibration clears space quickly and effectively, and it’s especially helpful if you’ve been feeling sluggish, uninspired, or creatively blocked.

Walk around your office and ring the bell in each corner, near your desk, and by the door. You don’t need a special bell, anything with a pleasant, resonant sound will do. You might be surprised how different the room feels afterward.

Closing Thoughts

Slow seasons in business are often invitations, not punishments. They ask you to pause, reassess, and make subtle yet powerful shifts. Your home office isn’t just a place to work, it’s a living reflection of your energy, mindset, and momentum. When you align your environment with clarity and intention, you create the space for inspiration, opportunity, and growth to re-enter.
