Are You Getting the Right Help?

Updated: Nov 4, 2019

You’ve got a problem and you seek professional help to overcome this problem, but are you working with the right people?

I often overhear or am sometimes involved in conversations about people discussing their diagnoses and medical care plans. It’s fascinating to feel a sense of excitement from the individual who is sharing. There’s excitement in getting the diagnosis, in having the surgery, in taking the medications, in needing to follow up. And then a lot of times, it isn’t just the one issue- it’s this issue led to that issue and then to another issue. It’s this incredible story I hear repeatedly of feeling terrible, finding a solution, and still having more problems.

It makes me queasy. Dramatic? Maybe. But I’m not kidding. It makes me feel sick because I was once that person.

Finding Help

I had this incredible care team of professionals from academic to medical trying to identify and help me solve my problems. It was exciting to get a diagnosis- yes, now we all know what we’re dealing with! Then came the plan- everyone would do their part, especially me, to ensure my situation improved. The plan included medications and appointments with several different professionals. Boy, did I feel supported and cared for- and excited. Hope had been restored.

We all followed the plan. There would be some good days and some bad days, and some downright terrible days. What adjustments could be made? Maybe some tweaks to the plan, like adding additional medications or increasing the dosages. Maybe more appointments. I was on board. Yes, let’s do this. My care team knows best.

Year after year we followed and tweaked the plan. Things got worse and worse and much, much worse.

Found Help and Still Struggling

About five years into this nightmare, someone told me about essential oils. I had never heard of essential oils and no one on my care team had talked about them. I wasn’t interested, I was already doing everything possible to get better! Wasn’t I? But it was my sister who had shared, so I wasn’t completely dismissive. I started to dabble with some things she recommended and noticed some improvements, but at this point it almost seemed too little too late. I was in a very deep hole.

Not long thereafter, someone told me about energy healing. Never heard of that either, but I was willing to try anything. Within two months of seeing an energy healer, my life had taken a 180 degree turn for the better. I had never seen anything work so quickly and effectively.

As grateful as I was for this dramatic change, it bothered me that no one on my care team had ever suggested holistic interventions like aromatherapy or energy healing. How could something so powerful and effective never have been discussed in our planning meetings?

The answer is simple: because they didn’t know.

Different Solutions from Different Perspectives

When you seek a medical doctor to help you solve an issue, you will most likely receive a medical solution. When you seek an academic professional to solve an issue, you will most likely receive an academic solution. When you seek a holistic health provider, you will most likely receive a holistic health solution. You get the point.

One summer I worked at my cousin’s chiropractic clinic. I read one of the magazines in the lobby featuring a case study of a baby with acute torticollis (tilted neck). A medical professional recommended surgery to snip the muscle in the neck, and a chiropractor recommended several sessions to bring the neck into proper alignment. The family opted for chiropractic, care and the baby was back to normal within weeks. Two different approaches to wellness by two different types of professionals. Both would solve the issue, but one might involve more risk and long-term issues than the other. I love this example because it really illustrates a very important concept: there’s more than one way to solve a problem.

There are so many different ways to approach our wellness, but depending on who is on your care team, you may or may not be aware of those options. It is so frustrating to rely on a care team working to find solutions for you and have those solutions make things worse. I wish I would’ve known there were other ways to care for ourselves. I honestly had no clue about this world of holistic health and alternative medicine when my care team formed. All it took was a couple of people close to me who had heard about some pretty cool things and decided to share it with me that turned my life around.

Holistic health is not a joke and it is not a scam. I still see many people hesitant to try an alternative route for care, even though they are still struggling despite typical interventions. Every day, real people like you find the solutions they need working with a holistic provider. I’ve wondered what my life would’ve been like if I knew the things I know now. But perhaps if I had, it wouldn’t be so important for me to try to help people avoid going through what I did.
