18 Reasons You Shouldn't Use Essential Oils

Updated: Dec 9, 2019

Essential oils seem to be the latest craze in wellness these days, but are they really all they’re cracked up to be or is it just a sales scam? After all, when did our health classes in school talk about taking care of our minds and bodies using aromatherapy? And very rarely do our primary care providers, psychologists, and other health care professionals recommend essential oils. The only person who ever talked to me about essential oils was my sister, an organizational behavior specialist moonlighting as a project manager.

I admit, even though I copied everything my sister did growing up, I had no idea what the h she was talking about with this essential oil stuff. I was already doing so many things to create a healthy home and working with several professionals and essential oils NEVER came up in any conversations with them. After staying with her for a week over the holidays, I saw her put essential oils to work for us and our children and my mind was blown. Did you know your child doesn’t actually have to lay in bed for 45 minutes before falling asleep? I didn’t! Did you know aromatherapy can work well for stressful moments and help you feel calm and in control? I didn’t! Not until I stayed with my sister.

I officially began the essential oil journey with a Premium Starter Kit in January 2014. While it seems like everyone is using essential oils, it also seems like more people are unaware of the benefits and even further, don’t believe in them. *GASP* I’ve learned a lot over the last 5 years and was thinking about all the reasons why people probably aren't using essential oils and turned it into an exciting list for your viewing pleasure. Let's get this party started!

  1. You enjoy your chaotic nightly routine with your children. For real, bedtime used to be such a chore in my household, starting the routine with my child not wanting to go to bed to finally getting into bed and laying there for nearly an hour before falling asleep. Bedtime really doesn't have to be that complicated. Begin bedtime with wind-down essential oils like Lavender or Cedarwood, blends like Peace & Calming, or roll-ons like Tranquil and Rutavala.

  2. You prefer toxic-filled candles and room sprays linked to hormone disruption to “freshen” your home. I used to be the Queen of wax melts and room freshening plug-ins. At a young age, my son had skin issues, allergies, and was actually prescribed an inhaler and antibiotics on a few occasions. Once I started diffusing, I used the wax melts and plug-ins less and less, eventually completely eliminating them from my home. Guess whose allergies mellowed and the need for an inhaler completely disappeared? Did you guess my son?! Because that is correct. Crazy right?? I had no idea those fragrances were so dangerous. Diffusing high quality essential oils is the perfect way to keep your home smelling fresh without the addition of harmful chemicals. Essential oil blends like Purification or Citrus Fresh are great picks for clean, pleasant aromas.

  3. You know the only way to truly clean is by using chemical-filled cleaners linked to asthma, allergies, and even cancer. Confession: I have never been great about keeping up with major household cleaning, but after inhaling from a bottle of bleach (hey, Grandma’s laundry smelled sooo good!) at a young age, I knew I didn’t want those types of products around my child. I always looked forward to getting the Mr. Yuk stickers at school to put on all the bottles of cleaner at home. As I would eventually come to learn, you can deep clean without harmful, toxic chemicals. I’m a huge fan of Thieves Household Cleaner, and you can even make your own cleaning products with essential oils like Lemon and blends like Citrus Fresh and Purification.

  4. You thrive on feeling stressed and overwhelmed. I get it, some stress is good stress. But did you know 75-90% of doctor’s visits are for stress related issues (WebMD, 2017)? We gotta keep our stress levels under control! Aromatherapy can be helpful in managing stress. Citrus oils are very uplifting and can help increase focus, and blends like Stress Away and Valor promote calm and relaxation.

  5. You enjoy tossing and turning all night instead of having restful sleep. Isn’t tossing and turning so frustrating? You can’t turn your mind off, you start watching the clock and feel stressed about the time and how soon you’ll have to be awake for the day. It’s totally frustrating! Just like we can incorporate essential oils into our children’s bedtime routines, we can do it for ourselves, too! Start winding down about an hour before bed. Diffusing calming oils like Lavender or blends like Peace & Calming to quiet your mind. You can even mix a couple drops of essential oil with Epsom salt and dissolve in a warm and relaxing bath. Try sipping on a hot chamomile tea with a drop of Lavender Vitality. When you finally get to bed, roll Tranquil on the back of neck and the bottoms of your feet. You’ve just set the stage for a peaceful bedtime.

  6. You don’t question the chemical-filled products you use with your baby. My baby had eczema during his first year of life, so I already was being careful with our detergents and scented lotions. How I wish he could’ve smelled like that delicious, pink baby lotion! This was 15 years ago. I knew there were many products I couldn’t use for him, but looked at it more as my baby having sensitive skin than these products containing toxins. Parents are so lucky these days with better access to information. The Seedlings baby line includes baby wipes, baby oil, baby lotion, and diaper rash cream free of harsh chemicals.

  7. You don’t desire to take your meditation practice to the next level. Some essential oils can actually promote grounding and spiritual connectedness, making them a perfect companion to your prayer and meditation. Try oils like Frankincense or blends like Evergreen Essence, Harmony, or Inspiration. You can diffuse or apply topically to back of neck or chakras.

  8. You’re not interested in neutralizing the negative energy affecting you, your home, or your work environment. Wait, what? Essential oils can neutralize negative energy? Yes, they totally can! My top picks include the blend White Angelica and singles like Palo Santo and Northern Lights Black Spruce. Diffuse these oils to help lighten the energy and create a higher vibing environment.

  9. You’ve always dealt with and resolved your emotions in a healthy manner. We’ve been taught to hide our emotions, and the result? Outbursts, overeating, undereating, stress, dissatisfaction, feelings of emptiness, and even sickness. Aromatherapy is best known for its emotional benefits! Use blends like Forgiveness to release hurt feelings, Inner Child to reconnect with your authentic self, Surrender to help you reduce your need to control, or Release to help you let go of anger.

  10. You already have a healthy mindset that attracts joy, wellness, and abundance instead of disappointment, drama, and financial stress. Our mindset and beliefs help actualize what we experience in this reality. Some of our beliefs are beneficial to us and others hinder us. We can use essential oil blends like Abundance to help clear abundance blocks, Awaken to enhance self-awareness, and Believe to release your unlimited potential.

  11. You’ve achieved your ideal body weight. This could be true for you, but for many, weight can be an ongoing struggle. Essential oils like Peppermint promote feelings of satiety when inhaled. The Slique product line includes supplements, tea, shakes, and more to assist you while you work on releasing excess body weight.

  12. You love the taste of plain water. It’s your favorite! I hear over and over again how people don’t drink enough water because they hate drinking plain water. If this sounds like you, try oils from the Vitality line like Lemon, Grapefruit, or Tangerine to enhance the flavor of your water. Truth: Tangerine Vitality in water is ah-mazing.

  13. You never use Wi-Fi or electronics, so you don’t worry about the negative frequencies lowering your vibes. Well, if you’re reading this obviously you use electronics. Since our exposure to electronics and Wi-Fi is basically inevitable, you’re going to want to use some high vibing essential oils. Single oils like Frankincense, Northern Lights Black Spruce, or Rose and blends like Thieves, Christmas Spirit, and Sacred Mountain are excellent choices.

  14. The culture and climate at work is amazeballs without any office drama and very little turnover. While some workplaces like this do exist, this is not always the case. The environment of a workplace can be enhanced with aromatherapy with blends like Field by Oola, Acceptance, and Gathering.

  15. You never struggle with creativity or generating ideas. I remember years ago being part of a holiday decorating committee at the office. One of my co-workers had this amazing vision that I couldn’t even comprehend how to bring it to life. But she did! Sometimes creativity and ideas are not are strong suit, and we need a little help. Try single oils like Jasmine, Peppermint, or Rosemary or blends like Motivation and The Gift.

  16. You’re a total ace at interviewing, public speaking, and having difficult conversations. I can facilitate workshops like nobody’s business, but put a camera in front of me and holy skit am I a nervous wreck! Valor is the perfect blend to help us feel relaxed and confident in these types of situations.

  17. You’re already tuned in to the frequency of wealth. Wealth has a frequency?? YES! Everyone does. Like Wayne Dyer says, "you don’t acquire abundance, you tune into it"! Try oil blends like Oola Finance and Abundance to activate that wealth frequency.

  18. You’re completely satisfied with your career. All the time I hear people complain about their jobs or share about dreams they never believe they’ll be able to pursue. Did you know we all have divine gifts? These gifts can very well shine through in your career, even without having to switch jobs. Try blends like Build Your Dream, Highest Potential, Live Your Passion, and Field by Oola.

Whew, what a list! Thanks for reading! Share with someone who needs it. What are some things essential oils have helped you with or do you hope essential oils can help you with?
