When You Find Yourself Adopting New Parenting Trends

Updated: Dec 9, 2019

There are so many dos and dont's of parenting, sometimes it feels impossible to navigate. The main thing is to focus on the needs of your family.

One of my friends recently shared a blog post on Facebook about the difficulty of being a parent and keeping up with all the parenting trends, including chemical-free living. The article is pretty accurate. There are so many dos and dont's of parenting, sometimes it feels impossible to navigate. The conclusion is we all are just trying to do our best, no matter what we are doing. But I must confess: I am one of those parents seeking chemical-free living where I can.

I have spent the last several years reducing the amount of chemicals in my home. It wasn't because it's super easy to live chemical-free (I love nachos so much). It wasn't because all my friends were doing it (they weren't). It wasn't because I read scary posts on Facebook about all the terrible things in products we use everyday (I Snopes everything). It's because my child was struggling significantly with behavior at school, and I did pretty much everything under the sun to try to help him.

You see, most of us don't make changes unless there is reason to. And the reasons to change aren't usually because things are so wonderful you just can't stand it anymore. It's usually because we are suffering in some way, or we are ready for something different. After seeing my friend share this post, I thought about how I had done back flips when Young Living recently introduced a clean makeup line, baby line, and mineral sunscreen, and I have been shouting from the rooftops about it ever since. Have I been too vocal about it? Do my friends think I disapprove of their parenting choices or the products they use with their children? I seriously hope not.

I want to share what I have learned in hopes it may help someone else. In our society when we have physical or emotional issues, the solution is often in the form of a pill or procedure with little exploration of a cause. We don't think about what we put into our bodies or onto our bodies or about how that may affect us or our environment. Truthfully, if our life had been perfect, I probably wouldn't have thought about these things either.

I share about chemical-free living, essential oils, and energy healing because I have found tremendous benefit, not to shame or make anyone feel less than amazing. I am not perfect at chemical-free living, but it is becoming easier. Our lives aren't perfect, but I am acquiring helpful tools and resources to help us along this journey.

If your child is happy, healthy, and thriving, there is probably no reason to switch up what you're doing or the products you choose to use in your home. But if they're not, please consider what environmental factors could be contributing to these issues. Most healthcare and mental health professionals will not discuss the harmful effects common household products can have on the physical, emotional, or behavioral health of your child.

Like the author that inspired this post alluded, we all are just trying to do our best. And I would like to add this: when our best needs to be better, may the information and necessary resources we need find us.

What parenting trends have you adopted for happier, healthier children? Share in the comments below.
